Living in London

Welcome to our new topic page... Living in London. This topic is all about the capital city, its history, where it is and how it has changed over the last few years. We will be covering iconic buildings, the River Thames and new developments to the local area. We will be introducing a new book, Paddington which links with our topic. We have already been on an amazing visit around London which you can look at below. There will be plenty more to look forward to! Please see the topic letter below for more information!

Summer Term Topic Letter

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back. We hope you have had a restful break. We are looking forward to a fantastic term ahead. Please take note of the important messages below, most of which are specific to Year 2.

Please ensure you leave your children in the morning so that that they can come into school independently and promptly. The school gates open at 8:40 and it is important that children are ready for the start of their lessons as soon as possible! At the end of the day, children can be picked up from the main playground. If you have not arranged a time with your child’s teacher to discuss their progress, please do as soon as possible.

The week commencing 20/05/2018 will be SATs week. We will be working hard with all the children in Year 2 to make sure they achieve their potential. Please do not put pressure on your child, as KS1 SATs are mainly for the school.  They are to ensure progress is being made and to look ahead to what your child can achieve by the time they come to the end of Britannia Village.

Our main Year 2 topic for the Summer Term is ‘Living in London’. The children will be learning London’s transport, buildings and history. We will be going on a number of educational visits as part of this topic so parent volunteers will be necessary. Please speak to your child’s class-teacher if you are willing to help out with these.

In English we will be writing a persuasive piece about the great things London has to offer. We will also be looking at a new text in Year2 called ‘Paddington.’ This links perfectly with our topic and we will be writing narrative that are based on the story.

Homework will be given on a Tuesday and the children will have until the following Monday to bring it back. This will be a piece of Maths or English homework and a creative piece of homework linked to Topic or Science. Please support your children with their homework and help them to develop a sense of responsibility around getting work done on time. The children will also bring a reading book home each week and will have a reading journal where they should write some comments on what they have read and it is important that these are signed by you.

The children will have PE twice a week and we would appreciate it if they come in to school with their PE kits, on Monday and Friday. If you could take the time to clearly label your child’s uniform and PE kit this would be extremely helpful.

As this is summer term, we expect temperatures to rise so it is important that your child comes in to school with a re-usable water bottle. The school is trying to cut down on the amount of food waste and plastic waste we produce. This will be a fantastic start!

If you have any other questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to come and speak to us.

Chris, Kate and Nicki (Year 2 Teachers)
